Oakland Townshipย is sometimes referred to โ€œOakland Charter Townshipโ€ and is a northern suburb on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan. Oakland is one of the original 25 townships in Michigan, when the territories were divided into townships in 1827. The boundaries of Oakland Township were finalized in 1837 when Michigan gained statehood. Oakland is home to the Goodison Mill which began as a grist mill and mill race built on Paint Creek in 1835. Near the mill was built a station which became known as Goodison station. Oakland Township was also home to the first rail trail in Michigan which is known as the Paint Creek Trail. Oakland Township is bordered by Addison Township, Orion Township, and Rochester Hills.
