Shelby Charter Township, is officially known as the Chartered township of Shelby. The township, a northern suburb of Detroit, is located roughly 15 miles north of the city. There are no incorporated villages and four unincorporated communities: Preston Corners, Shelby, Shelby Village, and Yates. Shelby Township was established by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature on April 12, 1827, and a civil government was organized the following May. The Township operates the Shelby Township Library as well as Cherry Creek Golf Course.

Shelby Township Library – The Shelby Township Library prides itself on being an educational and community resource for the towns within Shelby Township. The library offers resources in printed books, encyclopedias, and publications. They also offer an extensive e-library, audiobooks, and access to online resources through the library. The library also holds a number of reading based events throughout the year for the kids of the neighborhood.

Shelby Township Historical Committee – The Shelby Township Historical Society strives to document the history of Shelby Township, Michigan and to organize and preserve historic structures, artifacts and personal recollections of Shelby Township. The Shelby Township Historical Committee welcomes residents and non-residents who are interested in local history or have information to share. Donations and loans to their historical archives are welcomed.

Shelby Township Rotary – The Shelby Township Rotary Club works every day to bring together the community and local businesses.This branch of Rotary International also stands by their slogan “Service Over Self” and meets regularly to discuss ways to improve the community and serve the vulnerable in Shelby Township in Utica. The Rotary Club of Shelby Township also engages in community events which involve participants in business and public life.
