How to Make Your Decor More Unique

Sometimes, you crave change in your home design and seek new ideas to adapt. As you scroll online or page through magazines for inspiration, you may start to find the same redundant suggestions. Sure, that velvet accent chair looks fantastic in everyone’s home, but what if you want something unique? There are ways to decorate your home so that it reflects you and not a Pinterest board. Check out these five ideas to make your home decor truly one-of-a-kind.

Built-ins

Create a timeless, charming look with built-ins: cabinets that are custom created to fit a specific space. They can also be recessed into the wall. Not only do built-ins maximize a room’s dimensions and storage capacity, but they also help to create a seamless, tidy look on which you can display more of your own decorative treasures. Fill the cabinet shelves with pictures, letter-boards, indoor plants, anything that captures your style and personality so that it’s automatically unique.

Partitions

Another way to maximize and make the most of your living space is with decorative partitions or room dividers. Partitions can introduce new colors, patterns, and textures to a room while also allowing you to create staged vignettes or smaller scenes within one larger room. This versatility is great if you want to change a room’s movement and flow or establish privacy and create a more intimate space.

Shiplap

To introduce patterns and textures in a more permanent way, consider hanging shiplap. This interior design feature uses long wood planks — most often painted white — to create a cohesive wallcovering. While the wood is usually hung horizontally to lengthen and expand the space, step outside the box and turn the planks vertically to add more height. Or, instead of opting for the traditional white, bring in more originality and character by painting the wallcovering in an unexpected navy or french gray.

Light Fixtures

If you want to make a big, bright statement, incorporate focal light fixtures into your design. Go bold with hanging lights decorated in draped wooden beading, macrame, fringe, or woven rattan. Or, for a more minor but still significant impact, replace your current mounts and rods with hardware made of mixed-metals. Whichever way you choose to add new materials, textures, and shapes to your lighting is sure to create an eccentric point of interest.

Statement Ceilings

Instead of changing the light fixtures, perhaps you want to change the whole ceiling! Do away with drab white and cover the ceiling in bright, bold paint; bring in new patterns and personality with a lively wallpaper; or explore new materials by creating designs in wood paneling or brick. Any of these ideas will draw your attention upward where you can admire such a one-of-a-kind, custom-created space.
